STANDARD SIX - External Development Leadership
A school executive will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but in fact build community, the leader proactively creates with staff, opportunities for parents, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investments of resources and good will are not left to chance.
6A: Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach
The school executive designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
I created a presentation that provides an audience I meet with (i.e staff, parents) an introduction of who I am and my aspirations. This artifact provides the audience with a visual and key phrases about me. This artifact gives insight about my vision, and personality.
This artifact details how I dealt with a parent concern about their student's safety.
I conducted a brief informational about the school community I serve in during principal residency. This informational conveys a broad picture of the school community, from the curriculum to the cultural framework of the school. Audiences may use this information as snapshots about the school community that they may use and share.
The Moore Square administrative team created a carpool video that introduces parents to the appropriate steps of bringing their student(s) to school during morning and afternoon carpool. Throughout the video, the audience hears from the administrators and sees them describe the key steps in carpool. The video provides a visual of the school and of each aspect within carpool, and emphasizing safety precautions to take to ensure a beneficial experience.
I developed a proposal for an activity involving the business community in the Southeast Raleigh area to promote the school community. I wrote a letter of invitation to these business leaders inviting them to this activity. Throughout the letter, I detailed the opportunity for partnership between the school and community that benefits all involved, notably our students.
I prepared a letter regarding the upcoming End-of-Grade/End-of-Course tests to the families of students at my school. In the letter, I included the dates of the exams and the times for testing. I also included testing tips that families can share with their students that detailed ways that they can prepare for the tests.
In this letter, I provide details of the fundraising efforts of my school's PTA. The PTA's fundraiser is the Annual Fund, which is open during the first two months of the school year for staff members and visitors to make contributions. These contributions go towards the efforts of our school's arts programs, field trips, and the efforts of staff members to enhance the learning experiences of students in the classroom.

The developmental project is a research assignment conducted by Wake Principal Leadership Program Fellows in to the experiences of students at the elementary level. The intention of the study is to inform audiences (i.e. parents, stakeholders) of the educational opportunities extended to students and families of pupils attending school in grades PreK through 5. Throughout the developmental project, fellows learned about the curriculum offered in PreK-5, the programs available to students in this educational level and responses from interviews with students, staff members and parents of students enrolled in the Wake County Public School System in grades PreK-5.
The Moore Square Family Academy is an evening event coordinated with the Wake County Public School System's Office of Equity Affairs to build relationships with the families of our students. The Family Academy is an opportunity for our families to learn about ways they can have engaging conversations with their students about academic assignments. Parents had the opportunity to engage in dialogue with presenters about methods that prove successful in motivating their students to actively take part in their education.
I used a Google form to continuously update when I spoke with a student's parent. Throughout the form, it stores information about the student's name, the parent's name, the date I contacted the parent, and the type of contact (i.e. phone, in-person, email). This form is particularly helpful in referencing when I communicated with a parent.
Math 8 Night Flyer
I created a flyer for our Math 8 Night event, in which the math 8 teacher, our administrators, intervention teacher, instructional facilitator, and members of our community engagement team met with the families of our Math 8 students. The attendees participated in a presentation about their student's math journey over the course of their tenure of middle school in addition to providing parents and students with more awareness of the resources in place for students to enhance their skills in understanding the math 8 content. This event was based on the assessing data of students in previous years and their experiences in Math 6 Plus and Math 7 Plus and working to bridge connections of the Math 8 material in order for students to become more prepared for the Math 8 course and access to resources to help them grow in the learning of the subject matter.
I created a reminder for our Math 8 Night event. The math 8 event consisted of a team effort, in which the math 8 teacher, our administrators, intervention teacher, instructional facilitator, and members of our community engagement team met with the families of our Math 8 students. I conducted the reminder, which our administrative team relayed to families via phone, text message, and email to our families.
I created a sign-in sheet for our Math 8 Night event. 6B: Federal, State and District Mandates
The school executive designs executive protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state, and district mandates.
Testing Schedule
As state testing period began at Moore Square, our administrative team was tasked with ensuring that our staff were aware of the testing logistics for each day, including staff assignments. The following table includes staff names and their locations to conduct testing. As a result of this process, I learned about the intentional proactive planning that needs to take place for this significant experience for students and staff.
